Our Beginnings
In 1830 John Winebrenner founded the Churches of God. Along with him were a small group of men who dedicated their lives to preaching the gospel. These men were assigned to preach in certain geographical areas called circuits. They traveled from town to town preaching at small gatherings in homes, barns, and schools, as there were very few church buildings in the early years. As early as 1841 the church records list Maytown on the preaching schedule for the Lancaster County circuit preachers. These meetings were only held once or twice a month as the preachers covered a very large area, often walking all day to the next meeting. As attendance grew at these meetings, it was realized that there was a need for a church building in the Maytown area. On May 24, 1858 a Church of God was organized in the neighborhood of Maytown by Elder George Sigler with 22 members. Land was purchased and on August 7, 1859 the Bethel was completed. A service of dedication was held a few days later on August 13th. In the 1860s Maytown began sharing station preachers with Bainbridge, and sometimes Mount Joy, until 1910 when Maytown was made a separate station. Since that time 22 pastors have served at the Maytown Church of God.
Expansion of the Building
Through the years many changes have been made to the church building. In 1922 the alcove was added in the pulpit area and stained glass windows installed; in 1932 Sunday School rooms were added to the west side of the sanctuary; in 1936 the steeple was added to the bell tower; and in 1959 the present Educational Building was constructed.
